Chapter 11

Lucy

I walk through the house behind Roxy as we go room to room, starting at the nursery and ending in the kitchen. Her smile widens with every step of the way.

“Oh, Lucy, your house is looking a lot better!” Roxy declares happily. “Wow, you’ve worked so hard.”

“Kyle has been helping,” I say. “It isn’t like I’ve been doing it all on my own. And he’s had some guys he knows working on the roof. The only real issue I keep having is the electrics, but Kyle says he’s on it.”

“Kyle is a good guy, isn’t she?” Roxy clasps her hands together. “I’m happy you have him. It seems like things are going well.”

I’m not so sure. I might not want to vocalize it aloud, but I’m worried about me and Kyle. I don’t think he sees what I’m going through. It doesn’t help that neither of us have addressed the swirling rumors about Courtney’s parentage that are plaguing the news and social media right now.

It’s stressing me out, not knowing what we’re supposed to say, what Kyle expects of me. But that’s not enough to negate all the good he’s done.

“And he’s taking you out shopping to get a dress for the end of the season gala tonight, right?” Roxy asks, as she nudges me playfully in the side. “For a designer dress. Are you excited?”

“I-I think so. I’m nervous, to be honest. I mean, it’s not like I have a ton of designer dresses lying around.”

Roxy giggles like I’m being foolish. “You don’t need to worry about that. You’ll look amazing. You always look great, though. I’ve always thought that about you.”

I resist the urge to roll my eyes. She’s just trying to build up my confidence, but I don’t think anything will today. I’m terrified. Kyle is taking me into a part of his world that I know absolutely nothing about.

“Anyway,” Roxy continues with a sweet smile, “you won’t need to worry when you’re with Kyle. He knows how to navigate that world.”

“Yeah, you might be right about that…” I’m not sure that’ll help, though. “And I do need to make sure I have something nice to wear to the gala. I have to make sure I fit in.”

Again, it’s up to me to find a way to fit in with this world that I’m on the outskirts of. Every now and again, I’ll feel like I’ve been let in, that I’m part of the family, but really, I’ll always be the girl who doesn’t really fit.

“I think you’ll have fun.” Roxy nods. “And you won’t need to worry about Courtney. I’m looking forward to hanging out with her for the afternoon.”

A car honks outside, making me jump. Roxy laughs, though, and indicates for me to leave. I peer out the window to see Kyle in some expensive car.

“What is that?” I ask Roxy. “That’s some kind of red sports thing. I didn’t know Kyle owned anything like that.”

“Yeah, he borrowed it. He wants to impress you.”

Oh my God, am I ready for all of this? This is a bit over the top.
